Esalen Institute – Meditation

esalen

Our Story

Esalen. The word itself summons up tantalizing visions of adventure, of unexplored frontiers, of human possibilities yet to be realized. There is the wonder of the place itself, 120 acres of fertile land carved out between mountain and ocean, blessed by a cascading canyon stream and hot mineral springs gushing out of a seaside cliff. There is the delicate and subtle Big Sur air of a late afternoon in May, the midnight mist of July, and the drenching February rain. There are October nights so clear the Milky Way can light your walk along the darkened garden path. And always there is the sound of the sea.

And then there are the people — the people who live there and love the land, and the 750,000 more who have come from all over the world to participate in Esalen’s 50-year-long Olympics of the mind, heart, body, spirit, and community, committing themselves not so much to “stronger, faster, higher” as to deeper, richer, more enduring in the fellowship of other seekers.

They come for the intellectual freedom to consider systems of thought and feeling that lie beyond the constraints of societal norms. They come to re-discover ancient wisdoms in the rhythms and tides of the body, and poetry in the pulsing of life itself. They come to rediscover the miracle of self-aware consciousness. Often they come away inspired by a fierce desire to learn and keep on learning through all of life, and beyond.

Esalen is a place with a global reach. In the words of Thomas Wolfe about America, It is a place where miracles not only happen, but where they happen all the time.

Ten Thousand Waves – Retreats

10thousandTen Thousand Waves is dedicated to providing a Japanese sense of serenity and relaxation. Everything we do from the gardens to the woodwork, from the therapies to the therapists has been constantly and thoughtfully refined over the last 31 years. We pride ourselves on being “real”. We offer a unique ‘Japanese-adobe’ esthetic, combining the traditional with state-of-the-art technology. Our humble beginning was a small bathhouse, eight outdoor hot tubs, and one massage room back in 1981. The emphasis then, as it is now, was on the salutary effects of hot water in the Japanese tradition. Historically Americans have always treated spas as a place to get something done, be it to lose weight, stop smoking, or cure TB. In the Europeans Kur tradition, spas are places to go if you’re sick; you often need a prescription. The Scandinavians use their spas to get warm The Japanese, however, go to their traditional spas–onsen and sento–to have a good time (often in a beautiful place), and that’s what we relate to at Ten Thousand Waves. Certainly, they use hot water to achieve all the goals above, but bathing is mostly about winding down from the day, meeting friends, taking time off with the family, and relaxing. The other health benefits are bonuses. Ten Thousand Waves is much more than just bathing, but all our massages, spa treatments, and skin care regimens are designed to compliment that amazing feeling of release that occurs when we settle into a big pool of hot water.

Guru Singh – Yoga Teachers – Kundalini

guru-singh2Guru Singh is a celebrated third-generation yogi, master spiritual teacher, author, and musician.

Guru Singh teaches conscious living through the tools of Humanology, Kundalini yoga, meditation, and sacred sound. He was born in Seattle in 1945 into a yogic spiritual household to a artist father and musician mother. His teachings grew from an esoteric curiosity inspired by his family’s deep connection to the masters of India and the blessings of being ready when teachers appeared.

Paramahansa Yogananda was his first teacher. Guru Singh’s great-aunt met Yogananda in Calcutta in 1916 and travelled with him from India to America in 1919. She studied with and served him until his passing in 1952.

In January 1969, Guru Singh met Yogi Bhajan, a spiritual leader from northern India and master of Kundalini yoga. From that moment on Guru Singh has been studying and teaching Kundalini yoga and meditation, a science taught in India for over five thousand years. He has spread this ancient science with passion and a practical fusion of Eastern mysticism into Western pragmatism.

Guru Singh’s books, music, yoga/meditation classes, blog posts, podcasts, and humanology lectures uplift thousands worldwide. Based in Los Angeles at Yoga West and Golden Bridge yoga studios, while traveling the world, he also teaches Kundalini Level I and II teacher training courses. He meets students privately for consultations and sound healing sessions when in Los Angeles.
